Getting Started
With Investing
First, where you get information is crucial. Nothing is truer
than the old saying, "Garbage in - garbage out."
Stay with respected and recognized information sources such
as The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, or Investor's Business
Daily. Watch CNBC or CNNfn whenever possible.
These sources will show you how "smart money people"
are thinking.
Where you choose to trade can be nearly as important as how
you choose a stock. There are many different kinds of
brokerage firms-full service, discount, on-line, etc.-and
each offers different levels of service at different costs.
If the cost of simply conducting a trade is your primary concern,
the cheapest will be the Internet brokers such as Datek, E-Trade,
Ameritrade, or National Discount. Some people are comfortable
with that.
On the other hand, if
you are like most of us and think there is too much at stake
to go-it-alone, working with a financial professional may
be in order. The investor and broker should function
as a team in creating a long-term plan for the investor.
Interview a potential broker to see if he or she seems like
a person you want on your team. There truly are differences
in styles and services. Some brokers, for example, offer
a computerized strategic asset allocation plan in which you
sit down together and map out a strategy to fit your specific
needs. Then they work closely with you over time to
help fulfill that plan.
